The Drava River between Maribor and the border at Središče ob Dravi has the character of a lowland river. In this area, the Drava River with its riparian area is a real treasure trove of biodiversity and therefore one of the most important nature conservation areas in Slovenia. With its flow, the river creates a variety of living environments, which alternate in a small space, and at the same time are constantly changing due to river activity. The Drava River area is part of the European ecological network Natura 2000. The Drava and the areas along the Drava are defined not only as Natura 2000 protection areas, but also as protected areas and natural features.
